Art is a story, it may be how someone sees the world or their way of telling the world something so private and intimate through their art. It is our society's way of showing how we truley feel and think. Pink says, "And that is the essence of the aptitude of Story- context enriched by emotion." I agree stories are our emotins at thier finiest. This unit has allowed us the opportunity to tell stories of our own through our art using various material and techniques. Pink speaks of scrapbooking which I think is similar to the meaning behind our art saying, "...popular "scrapbooking" movement , where people assemble the artifacts of their lives into a narrative that tells the world, and maybe themselves, who they are and what they're about...." (Pink, 2005). I think I used this concept in creating my pieces.
I also enjoyed the first project we made depicting a childhood story we enjoyed. I made mine on the "Fuzzy Rabbit" a story about a rabbit that was neglected and then loved again. I found the story to be very heartwarming and fell in love with the story. I loved using the watercolor pencils it thought they had a softer effect which was perfect when depicting a children's book. I tried to use lots of colors to continue the child like theme which I loved so much, I thought the kids toys added to the theme and told the story more accurately. I loved drawing the rabbit and thought the squares around like a quilt added a homey quality. I thought it added to the comfort that a toy like a quilt often provide to a child and then to an adult because of the feelings of love and family often affiliated with these objects and images.
The recycling project took on a more serious theme. It is important to tell the stories that need to be heard so we can change what is bad in our world. By using recycled material it was able to show a stronger message that make others listen. We used colorful objects, popsticle sticks, straws, and beads to make trees. The trees were the sticks, branches were the straws, and the beads were flowers or leafs. It represented the importance of nature and our need to work together and help preserve and care for our environment. This project mirrored that belief by having us work together with others to create our piece.
The cartoon had a similar theme of an important message being told. My cartoon showed students playing on cumputers while the door was open to the playground where it was a nice day out and with no kids outside. This is telling of the importance of going outside and exercising to a child's health and well being. While a lot of children do not enjoy going outside as much as they should. I enjoyed using art to show a message and loved the materials we used to do so.
I though this unit was fun because it was more personal and I was able to create art that describes me and my opinions. We were able to use lots of different materials and techniques which was good to gain experience doing so.
