As Pink Quoted the Dalai Lama, "I believe the very purpose of life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes in this religion or that religion we are all seeking something better in life. So I think the very motion of our life is towards happiness." It is through our art that we are able to express our emotions and the happiness we experience throughout life. It is these projects that have given me the opportunity to show what gives me happiness in life and what I treasure in life and those I find important. I loved having the opportunity to use creativity to express these views. Art is about expressing yourself and showing the audience a message of some kind. Rockwell for example celebrated the simplest day to day activities on America. He said of his art, "I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed". It is the simplest things in life that need to be celebrated and that evoke emotion and connection with their audience. I hope that I can create art that will create a connection and emotion within and then I'll know I am successful.
For the finger puppets I picked an animal I love and think I can relate to, the panda. I have always love pandas and their relaxed attitudes. I love to travel and have new experiences and learn as much as I can which I tried to portray in my panda. She was decorated with crazy colors and decorations to portray her passion, passion for life and happiness. I made her girly because I also consider myself to be "girly" as well. I loved being able to create her and add the little details such as her bow and boa and make her as realistic as I could. I enjoyed using the material we did, I found it to be easy to use and fun to make the puppet our of because it was such an airy material. I loved looking at what my peers made as well. I could use this project in my class as we showed in our popplet. We could create cultural pieces focused on celebrations and different cultures as well as integrated other subjects as well. This activity is something that is not messy but the students will enjoy and learn from.
The cover page was used to celebrate or commemorate an event or aspect of life. I choose to celebrate friends and the memories we share with one another. The cover represented my love for my friends who I think of as my family as well. It is these memories that I cherish and treasure. Content on a cover is seen as having importance as is the content on my cover page. I see the content I had on my cover as being very important to me. I think photographs of my own friends and memories are essential to make my message more genuine and real. By using photographs I was able to relate with my audience, they will see their own friends and memories through my photos because they too share similarities with my work. I would like to talk about how media portrays events and we can analyze to learn about culture, history, science, as well as integrating other subjects. We can look at magazine covers for example to tell us what our society see as important. We can look at these fore example to teach a history lesson by analyzing media and how it influences our society and history. We can also learn about historical events through the information in articles and headlines to understand the main points. I think having the kids create their own magazines given a topic we help them better understand the material.
Our last project was a choice studio. I chose to make a lantern based off of my lesson plan on Diwali. Diwali is a Hinduism holiday popular in India where they use lanterns and light to decorate their cities and celebrate. For my lesson plan I wanted the students to make their own lanterns for our Diwali celebration. I wanted to create an example that could possibly be used in a future lesson. I chose to use paper but add decoration as used in the festival. I used sequins and feathers to create a feeling of celebration and happiness associated with such an occasion. I wanted to create a piece that would reflect a festival of lanterns and lights. This project is great because the project can be used for a recreation of the festival. By letting kids experience the culture and celebrations they can learn more about the material were covering. I loved using art to teach a lesson and allowing students to better understand the lesson.
